Webcast: “Let's break down the barriers around cancer & work”

30 May 2022

In many European countries, one in three people will be diagnosed with cancer by the age of 75. Therefore, as an HR professional, an employer or manager, you are likely to face a situation when your employees or their loved ones are affected by cancer. And although cancer awareness has greatly increased in the last decades, managing cancer at work is still a taboo, with a key challenge being poor communication between employees diagnosed with cancer and their employers.

The webcast ‘Let’s break down taboo around cancer & work’ virtual policy dialogue was held on May 30th 2022, where different stakeholders (patients, survivors, caregivers, employers, and HR professionals) discussed why it necessary for organisations to adopt a comprehensive policy and set of procedures on managing cancer in the workplace and also have provided useful information and recommended actions to help you navigate through these challenges.

This event marks European Week Against Cancer and the objectives of the webinar were to:

  • raise awareness of the impact of cancer in the workplace;
  • present the ECL Patient Support Working Group’s publications (leaflet for employers, leaflet for employees and handbook for employers);
  • discuss ways of improving communication between employers and employees;
  • recommend actions that should be prioritised in Europe to facilitate return to work and tackle discriminatory behaviours towards cancer patients and survivors
